The Innocence Mission, “Brotherhood of Man”

If you know The Innocence Mission’s story then you know that much of their music has been heavily influenced by the death of songwriter and vocalist Karen Peris’ parents (on separate occasions – the bands other current members are husband Don Peris and bass player Mike Bitts.) But, like Over the Rhine, The Innocence Mission is a thoroughly two person affair. Husband and wife, the songs are guided by Karen’s enchanting vocals and Don’s guitar style (Karen also plays), and a sense of grand but simple storytelling. I prefer this live recording over the cut that made the album (I’m assuming they’re not the same – although I may be an idiot here) for the emotion that seeing them perform gives you.

From their latest We Walked in Song. Available through Badman Records.
